Kinnikuman (M.U.S.C.L.E.S) Toys

I loved, loved, loved these as a kid! I think the Kinnikuman figures is one of the greatest collections of characters ever. The Kinnikuman creators made characters of all facets of the imagination. There was NOTHING that they could not make into a wrestler. Character inspirations ranged from Deities to household appliances. And they all were brought to realization with the greatest of enthusiasm.

Even though the Kinnikuman universe was established in Japan through the comic and cartoon series, as a Westerner I was introduced through Bandai's M.U.S.C.L.E.S toy line. I had no clue to the characters histories. But I LOVED how they looked and felt they were the perfect size to put in a pants pocket for later play.

This toy line was my inspiration for convincing Jerry, Bill, and Gobi to do a Designer Toy Line with the Lucha Libre universe. It is also a long term goal of mine to do Lucha Libre figures in the same scale, style, and material as the M.U.S.C.L.E.S figures (right on down to that wonderful pale pink rubber!).

Here's a really nice website archive about Kinnikuman. Not all the links work but the ones that do are very comprehensive. Check it out:

i used to have these too! i loved how pliable and small they were...i remeber i used to use them as erasers when i couldn't find any, haha...probably shouldn't have done that to teacup man - they didn't work out too well as erasers...

ZEES:
I'm SOOO jealous!

I saw the new series and games... nice but I'm still partial to the originals. To me the originals are PERFECT. You lose something by making them into articulated action figures.

Adriean:
Yup! :-)

Jerry:
Just ignore it!

I never got rid of mine, while I need to find a better storage area for them because they spill all over the place when I move anything on my bookshelf. I remember I had no idea what their stories were and I would have to make them all up. I always got confused when there were multiple versions of Kinnikuman.

I would love to see Lucha Libre characters like this... I would definitely try and collect all of the kids.

Did you ever see the new series, Ultimate Muscle, or play either of the video games?

They had one on NES, then the 2nd on Gamecube.
