Scalped
SCALPED is the best Vertigo Comic since PREACHER. It's that good.
Jason Aaron's writing is sharp and relentless. R.M. Guera's art feels disparate, beautiful, and alive. The world they've created is one you know you should avoid at all costs but it's so beautifully rendered that you keep coming back for more.
The bulk of the story takes place on the Prairie Rose Indian Reservation, where Dash Bad Horse has mysteriously returned to "The Rez" in the midst of the Crazy Horse Casino's construction. Most of the residents have little to no hope that the new Casino will bring anything but more trouble to the poverty-stricken area. Dash Bad Horse has his own secret agenda... one that becomes more and more unclear as he's embedded into the wild world of "justice" that now exists in a place he once begrudgingly called home.
The foundation is rich. The characters are even richer. Aaron and Guera create a wonderful world that borrows from elements of Western, Crime, and Noir and makes it feel both familiar and fresh.
I started Scalped by reading the second Trade. After reading the second Trade Paperback, I immediately drove to the nearest comic shop to pick up the first. I then read the 2 Collections in sequence (yup, I read the 2nd one twice). I considered waiting for the 3rd Trade for a moment, but then realized I HAD to find out what happens next! So I bought ALL the issues of the comic that have been released. Having read everything that's out, I'm even more enthused.
It's THAT good.

Did R.M. Guera do the cover as well? This totally seems like the kind of book that'd have another artist doing cover duties a la 'Preacher.' Cover & interior artwork are damn fine though.
