K.West Grammy 2008 Performance
I didn't see the Grammy's (I gave up on watching award shows in teens)...but, with the wonders of YouTube, I was able to see the performances of Amy Winehouse, Feist, and Kanye West.
Being the big Kanye fan that you all know I am, I LOVED his performance. It's like a 21st century MJ peformance without the cool choreography.
Mista Hippo demands that we all go to Kanye's Glow In The Dark Tour (with Lupe Fiasco and Pharrell Williams). I'm not too keen on the big $$ I'm sure the ticket prices will cost... but after seeing this performance, it's obvious it'll be an event
Love the Tron homage. The luminescent glasses and jacket kill... and the Daft Punk cameo was clever (and probably way cooler on a real television). Are they really doing the production in real time? I doubt it, but it's a cool suggestion.
Oh yeah, I also got a little teary-eyed by the "Dear Mama" bit. Man, I'm a sap.

To believe in God or in a guiding force because someone tells you to is the height of stupidity. We are given senses to receive our information within. With our own eyes we see, and with our own skin we feel. With our intelligence, it is intended that we understand. But each person must puzzle it out for himself or herself.

my opinion has changed in light of a new video on kanye west's blog. whoever was directing the grammy's should have broadcast his performance from a single camera in the audience, because what went out over cbs looks drastically different than the view from a seat in the audience (which looks really good, actually). the broadcast version missed a lot of great lighting, and didn't really do the set justice.

No matter how much I love Kanye, he will never be up there with Mike Jackson. MJ was the complete package - dance, sing, produce...everything. I like Kanye's effort, but any comparison to the gloved one, just falls short. And at Mike's shows he had grown men crying and fainting in places like Budapest. It's like comparing Kobe Bryant to Jordan...different planets circling around the sun.

the7000club:
Kanye's personal energy may have not been on the level of his "Golddigger" performance... but that was more than made up for with a visual spectacle that harkened back to the glory days of Michael Jackson and Madonna. Luminescent jacket and glasses, flames, shoots of colored air in rhythm to the music, a tron illuminated pyramid with a Daft Punk cockpit (who also happened to be in some amazing tron style outfits).
All Kanye had to do was carry forth his lines with clarity and confidence (which he did). The "Dear Momma" close was also really nice and intimate. I admire Kanye's commitment to lyrics you can hear performed. The drums were dropped out for much of the performance to focus on the words and meaning. I thought that worked really nice.
As much as I love Jay-Z, his performances are awful because he relies on a lot of the stuff other emcees lean on for energy: screaming undecipherable lines, hot chick booty shaking, and annoying "hype-men" to finish lines while he catches his breath.
Kanye relied on none of that. It was him, the music, and a complex visual spectacle... allowing him to really break ground on how to elevate a "hip-hop" performance.

he performed gold digger with jamie foxx at the 2006 grammy's, and it was high energy... lots of fun. when kanye yelled, "is this what you been waitin' for" at this years grammy's, i couldn't help but think, "i'm still waiting."
there was nothing particularly big, or remarkable, especially given the fact that he got upset with mtv because he claimed the ability to have delivered a stunning opening to last year's vma's with the same song. i'm being an armchair quarterback, but if that's the performance he would have opened the vma's with (minus hey mama), he didn't deserve top-billing, no matter how much i like him.
