Dwight Howard 2008 Slam Dunk Competition Champion
Man, Jamario Moon and Rudy Gay really let me down! Gay's dunks were good by forgettable. Moon's "Beyond The Freethrow Line" dunk became a "Lob the Ball in the Air and I'll dunk from a Foot inside the Free Throw Line". Super, super disappointing!
Former champ Gerald Green and Dwight Howard more than made up for it with an entertaining plethora of creativity. Neither brought the showmanship of Vince Carter's Matrix-Breaking 2000 Slam Dunk run. But they brought plenty of athleticism, artistry, and (the King of this year's contest) props.
The most memorable dunks were the "Birthday Cake" and "Superman". I still don't think the "Superman" should be considered a dunk (he's not even close to the rim!). But their both wonderful spectacles.
Gerald Green's other dunks were good but had a sense of "I've seen something like it before" (please, let's just retire the under the leg thing... I know it's hard, but every variation of it looks like J.R. Rider's dunk from the 1990s!).
Everything that Dwight Howard felt new. He established momentum with the first dunk (my favorite: a bounce the ball off of the BACK of the backboard windmill). and wisely built on it with every round.
I'm still BOTHERED that the Superman was not a dunk! What do you think?

I mean i saw that superman dunk while i was at a restaurant in Brooklyn,
NY. I was impressed, i mean it wasn't technically a dunk, but shit.
I never saw someone throw a ball in with such hard precision.

Good point. I'm letting go of the non-dunk factor and beginning to appreciate it as amazing display of Howard's physicality.
The "Birthday Cake" is most appreciated in the slo-mo replays. The dunk was okay, but it's hilarious seeing Green delicately blow out that candle.

Lot's of luck. Yup. The hype wouldn't be nearly as large if it took him a few attempts to accomplish.
I admire Green... but that under the leg thing is definitely becoming old.

well, the superman dunk is amazing simply because he threw it in with 1 attempy plus with a lot of luck. haha. i also know felt it wasnt a dunk, but it was amazing and funny.
yup totalling agree with you with the 'a bounce the ball off of the BACK of the backboard windmill' dunk. that was perfect.
and for gerald green, he is way too confident (and a bit show off) disappointed me with the last dunk, same under the leg, dude.

I can't even be mad at the superman not being a dunk. If you can a) jump that high and b) throw the ball that god damn hard at the hoop without it bouncing back out, you should win some sort of competition regardless. The cupcake dunk was pretty awesome, more because of the fact that it stayed on the hoop, but the dunk itself was kind of weak. That being said, I can't even touch the bottom of the net most days, so who am I to judge?
