Bayonetta 1.1 Million Sold
Bayonetta sales, worldwide, for the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined has hit 1.1 million. If so, great news for Platinum Games/Clover Studios! There is some debate as to whether that number represents games shipped or games actually sold... either way its a nice step forward for a company known for creating quality games that have consistently struggled to find an audience. I loved what Kamiya-san and his team did on games like Viewtiful Joe, Okami, God Hand and Madworld. It's good to see that they've found a decent following with their latest action game. I wonder who is buying Bayonetta. Is it just the old-school fans feenin' for a new beat-em-up style game? Or has Bayonetta found a way to attract gamers that would normally play a game of Halo or Gears of War? There have been many arguments that traditional gamers (who are mostly male) hesitate to play as a female protagonist. It's nice to see that Bayonetta has been able to challenge that conception. I have yet to play Bayonetta (as I niether own a PS3 or Xbox 360). But my interest in the game is there. I've heard it's a lot of fun to play. Design-wise I really like the main character's look... but have a hard time appreciating the cast of villains in the game. Overall it's got a very garish SquareSoft Final Fantasy design style going for it... which has never been a look I've really liked. With all the trinkets and metal the characters are wearing it's very difficult to make out what the characters actually look like. To my eyes it just looks like blobs of 'bling bling'. Despite that snafu, Kamiya's got my trust. I assume it all makes sense once you give the game a little playtime. As I love the Bayonetta character you play as, I decided to include a selection of some really nice development sketches of the character from Platinum games. You can find more on their flikr account.

Suffy:
Thanks for sharing! I've got a bunch of games piling up myself. Trying to not buy any new ones prior to beating the ones I have... but it's hard to stay strong! :-)

Chalk up another sale.
I picked this game up based on the reviews that it had garnered.
The whole package feels very much like Ninja Blade. Which was a game
that I thoroughly enjoyed despite what others enjoyed.
So far with Bayonetta I'm impressed. It's a button masher but a great one.
The style and graphics are good, not the best I've seen but still nice to look at. I have one little issues with some of the cutscenes. They vary, either being the usual full CGI render or frames from an old movie. I feel that is a bit of a cop out, for some reason it doesn't feel it fits for me.
I'm not too far into the game though.
I have a few piling up that I haven't yet completed.

boompooper (part 1):
I am happily surprised that Bayonetta is winning gamers over with it's over-the-top sexuality. Even though the US pop culture is very sexual... we have a weird way of embracing it... if its too overt it feels "dirty". I also thin that humor is a very tough thing to connect with people on because it's super subjective. But, somehow, Bayonetta is connecting with two very delicate stylistic choices. It's nice to see.
Fiendenstein:
Nice insight. Thanks. I love the look of Dante from the Devil May Cry series. But, I could never get into it. Maybe it's because I knew that the game originally began as Kamiya's attempt at a Resident Evil PS2 game... but I could feel a lot of the Resident Evil 1-2 game design in the game and it really felt off-putting to me. Some of the slower paced elements in that first Devil May Cry really frustrated me. I just wanted to kick demon monster bootie. :-)
boompooper (part 2):
It's good to hear some good things about Darksiders! I love Joe Mad's crazy character designs. It's definitely sad that we haven't seen the end to Battle Chasers (there also needs to be a beautiful oversized Battle Chasers hardcover collection!) but its nice to see him doing games. I know he's a passionate gamer. He admitted that part of Battle Chasers lateness was him playing tons of Zelda: Ocarina of Time on the N64. I heard that Darksiders feels a bit like a Zelda game... which isn't surprising based on his love for Ocarina.

I'm currently playing Darksiders and am enjoying it quite a bit. The story and character development are on the weak side, but the gameplay is highly rewarding and the art of the characters and environment are fantastic. I've been a fan of Joe Madureira's artworkthroughout his comic book career, and although I'm upset that he never finished Battle Chasers, I'm glad that he is still putting out some great artwork. It just so happens to be in a video game form now.

I'm not a big fan of Devil may Cry, the first was really good but its a bit too batshit crazy for me. This looked the same to me, but after a bit of research... damn its a very solid, very simple but hugley effective game.
Its not just a hot chick with big boobs and guns which has been done so many times before, its both silly and clever at the same time selling the character. Not finished yet, but I'm very impressed so far.
Play Dante's Inferno for 5 minutes, both games are pretty much the same but one doesnt take itself seriously and is a focused twist on something old... and awesome, the other is a big budget re-hash that feels like someone has spilled Mountain dew over.

This game is HARD!!! ...but it's a fun challenge. I've read elsewhere about male players having a hard time playing as female lead characters. I think that is probably true to some extent, but Bayonetta seems to be winning the boys over with her over-the-top sexuality. Glad to see that such an offbeat game with hardcore gameplay mechanics is finding a larger than usual audience.
