Treasury Comics
A "treasury comics" is some kind of oversized comics. There's a site where they talk about these things. It was not really interesting until I found these pretty exciting covers. It was the glorious time when Marvel and DC weren't afraid of anything! I actually own the 2001 adaptation... It's made by the always crazy Jack Kirby and it's one of the most excessive and psychedelic comics I've ever seen. It's the exact opposite of the movie. I like both. What's wrong with me?

...interesting. any thoughts on how the 2001 comic compares to the book of the same name by Arthur C. Clarke?

I've read it something like 25 years ago, so my memories are pretty vague. I would say the book is probably in between. If I remember well, it was way more realistic than the movie.
