Olympics Spain Basketball Slanted Eyes Ad
So, what do you think of the latest Olympics Spanish Basketball Ad? In it the Spain Olympic Team are posing with "slanted eyes" in reference to the Olympics being held in Beijing. I think this is an interesting example of cultural perspective. Spanish culture embraces and pokes fun of racial caricature and stereotype. US American culture has become increasingly "politically correct"... admonishing anything that would be considered ignorant and rascist.
Me? Well, I think the US has become a little too P.C. Sometimes a little humor can help encourage a bit of productive dialogue. Rascism and prejudice are integrated into our culture. Pretending they do not exist can be as destructive as encouraging rascist bigotry. But, at the same time, I feel that Olympians represent their countries. As a representative, I would be very conscious of making decisions that would best represent my country. Slanted eyed publicity photos never look good. If my mothers are against it at the toddler age of 4... it's probably wise to avoid them as an adult. :-)

Madman Atomic Comics 9
I thought this was a pretty cool concept. Issue 9 of Madman Atomic Comics was essentially one huge panel broken up into a full comic (I guess that's about 20 pages). It's Madman and friends fighting some weird monsters in a city. With the city buildings in the back it became very clear that each page was a continuation of one larger panel.
On Newsarama they revealed the image in it's entirety without word balloons. I wish they could have made a flash version of it that revealed the word balloons in sequence where you could click on one word balloon and the next would appear. But I'm sure that'd take to much time and effort to do.
I've been collecting Madman since it's latest incarnation debuted at Image. I've always liked the characters and love Mike Allred's art. Not too sure where Allred is taking the story but every issue is an ambitious beauty. I'm happy to go along for the ride! This nifty concept is another example of Allred trying to push the limitations of comics to it's extremes.

Alicia Sacramone: A Real American Gal
Poor Alicia. Her mistake on the balance beam cost the US Women's Olympic Gymnastic team the gold medal.
At least she can find counsel in the fact that she's easily the prettiest girl on the team... and has a wicked left hook. Maybe it's just me, but I find her knocking out a drunk Frat boy kind of hot.

Spirit Movie Fight Scene
Man, this Spirit Movie is one helluva a train wreck. And I still can't decide if I hate it or love it. Acting's about Showtime Porn quality. Visuals don't know if they should be hyper-real or b-movie cheese. Characters look super dull and monochromatic.
But I keep going back to watching bits of it. And the leaked fight scene from SDCC is so ridiculous that I like it.
Jerry accurately mentioned that comic book movies try to over compensate the silliness of the medium of inspiration by doing this pseudo-sophisticated look. Spirit feels like it's trying to embrace the comic-book wacky that other films fear... but is still holding onto some weird pretentious sense of sophistication.
Check out the youtube video soon, 'cause I'm sure they'll take it down in the next 24 hours.
