As with most colorways, this one started as a Photoshop test by Jerry. At this point, we had no clue as to how to create colorways for figures…so what we’d do is take a photo of the sculpt and lay colors over the photo with pantone colors we liked.

Once Jerry’s in the zone he goes nuts…so he would submit dozens of colorway ideas to me. I’d give him some feedback, we’d then share our favorites with Gobi…and together we’d figure out what were the strongest colorways to put into production.

Black Bean started off with just a black El Panda with white eyes (with black dots in them) and a red star on his hat. From the get go, we knew it was an amazing design. Flock was becoming a pretty cool thing in the industry…so I suggested to Jerry that maybe we should do some Flock around the Panda eyes. Jerry wasn’t too keen on the look of the flock so he compromised by suggesting a spot black paint around the eyes. The results speak for themselves (and are WAY BETTER than we’d ever hope for).
